All-electric, zero-emissions bus to be tested in downtown Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - An all-electric, zero-emissions bus will be tested starting today as part of the downtown DASH service, city transportation officials said.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation will conduct a 90-day demonstration in which the bus will run as part of its downtown Los Angeles service, which transports an average of 29,000 passengers per weekday.

Los Angeles Transit Executive James Lefton said the bus will operate along a “very demanding” route with “multiple stops and large passenger loads.”

“Should the BYD buses perform well under these conditions, it will prove to be very influential in LADOT’s decision to adopt the pure electric technology,” he said.

The bus is made by BYD Motors, a rechargeable battery and bus manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China, and Los Angeles, with a production facility in Lancaster.

BYD buses have already been demonstrated in New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona, and have been in use in Shenzhen since August 2012.
