Everyone can experience driving a BYD electric or plug-in hybrid car with the Motability Scheme. Aiming to support people with disabilities in achieving independence, choosing a BYD on Motability allows for adaptations to be made to suit every driver’s needs.

Adaptations

Choose a BYD Motability car and take advantage of adaptations to suit you. These include adaptations to help you drive, to help you get in and out of the car, like swivel chairs and hoists, and to help you store equipment like boot and roof hoists.

Home charging point installation

If you choose the BYD Motability Scheme, installation of a home charging point will be included in your lease, or you could choose a subscription to the BP Pulse network if you’re not able to install a charger at home. The Motability Scheme will help you determine the best option.

Insurance

With a BYD Motability car, insurance is included, so you’re covered for a range of eventualities. This includes tyre and windscreen replacement cover.

Breakdown cover

Drive with peace of mind that you’re covered if you break down.

Vehicle tax

Your road tax is included in the Motability Scheme, so you don’t have to budget for this yourself.

How does the BYD Motability process work?

Check you’re eligible

You can join the Motability Scheme if you receive a qualifying mobility allowance and you have at least 12 months left. This includes the higher rate mobility part of PIP and the higher rate mobility part of DLA in the UK. Find a full list of eligible allowances and rates here.

Choose a vehicle that suits you best

Once you’ve confirmed you’re eligible, you’ll need to choose a BYD Motability car to suit you, whether that’s the spacious BYD ATTO 3 SUV, the compact city BYD Dolphin or the brilliant SEAL U DM-i.

Choose adaptations

Next, think about the type of adaptations you’ll need. Whether you need help with steering or getting in and out of your car, installation will be taken care of for you once you’ve chosen your car.

Paying for your electric Motability car

The allowance you receive will be exchanged for an electric Motability car. Your car payments will be made by your allowance provider, so you don’t have to do anything. If your allowance doesn’t cover the total cost, an Advance Payment may be needed to top this up. This is a fixed payment paid upfront, calculated depending on the cost of the car.

Apply and order

You can place your order with BYD. You’ll need a few things like a UK passport, National Insurance number, driving license and your grant award letter. You can also apply for BYD Motability online.

Home charger installation

You can choose whether you’d prefer to charge your car at home or on the go with a public charger. If you choose a home charger, Motability will take care of charger installation for you. You’ll also receive a Motability Go Charge card so you can top up at over 50,000 charge points. If you can’t install a charger at home, you’ll receive a subscription to the BP Pulse Network to charge at public charging stations.

Collect your vehicle

When your car is ready, your dealer will check it over. Your lease begins as soon as you collect your car, or you could choose to have your new BYD Motability car delivered if your dealer offers this. You’ll be asked to do a quick check of the vehicle's controls to ensure it’s suited to your needs, make sure your details are correct, and then you can enjoy your new BYD Motability car.
