BYD's New Energy Vehicles Drive Transition to Green Transportation in Latin America

2023/09/01

BYD has emerged as the world’s top seller of NEVs in the first half of 2023

On July 2, 2023, BYD revealed remarkable sales results, with monthly sales soaring to 253,000 units in June. This marked an impressive 88.2% year-on-year increase, surpassing the milestone of selling 250,000 units monthly for the first time. For the first half of this year, BYD sold 1,255,600 new energy vehicles, representing a remarkable 94.25% year-on-year growth. These figures solidify BYD's position as the world's top seller of new energy vehicles. Also, for the very first time, BYD earned a spot on the Top 10 Global Rankings of Automobile Sales.

BYD 2023 H1 1.25 Million New Energy Vehicles Sold

The driving force behind BYD's exponential growth lies in its unwavering commitment to technological innovation. BYD has successfully mastered the key technologies within the new energy vehicle industry chain, including batteries, motors, and electronic control systems. With a range of technologies such as the Blade Battery, DM-i Super Hybrid, e-Platform 3.0, CTB (cell-to-body) technology, e4 technology platform, and BYD DiSus Intelligent Body Control System, BYD has built comprehensive technology solutions, positioning itself at the forefront of the global green mobility evolution.

In response to the global trend of transportation electrification, BYD has identified the global business as a new avenue for growth. In the first half of this year alone, BYD exported over 74,000 units of passenger new energy vehicles. Since unveiling its strategy to expand its passenger car presence in international markets in 2021, BYD has actively pursued its overseas business expansion. It has successfully introduced its passenger car lineup to key markets including Japan, Germany, Thailand, Australia, and Brazil, etc. Currently, BYD's new energy passenger vehicles have entered more than 54 countries and regions, with models such as the HAN EV, TANG EV, and BYD Dolphin being exported. Notably, BYD YUAN PLUS (also named BYD ATTO 3) has made a significant impact, becoming the best-selling NEVs in Thailand, Israel, and Singapore for several consecutive months.

BYD is promoting electric mobility in Latin America

For many years, BYD has been operating in South American markets such as Brazil and Mexico, offering eco-friendly transportation solutions to support the region's transition towards a low-carbon transportation sector. In Latin America, multiple countries have implemented policies to foster the development of new energy vehicles. For instance, Chile introduced an electric vehicle strategy in 2016 to achieve 40% electrification of passenger vehicles by 2050. The Colombian government aims to have 600,000 electric vehicles on the roads by 2030. With the increasing demand for new energy vehicles in the South American market, BYD has a significant opportunity to expand its market presence.

In 2021, BYD introduced the BYD HAN EV to the Latin American market, launching in countries such as the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Colombia, and Costa Rica. BYD's international expansion is driven by its extensive technological expertise. In November of the same year, the BYD TANG EV was officially unveiled in Brazil. As the first pure electric 7-seater SUV in Brazil, this model garnered significant attention from professional media outlets and met the expectations of local consumers seeking new energy vehicles.

BYD adopted different product strategies tailored to specific regions. In South America, where charging infrastructure was still under development, BYD implemented a "two-legged" strategy encompassing both BEVs and PHEVs. BYD's insights into the local markets, combined with its significant strengths in core technology and product offerings, have been instrumental in establishing a solid foothold in the American market. In March 2022, BYD's DM-i models made their debut in Latin America, with the QIN PLUS DM-i and SONG PLUS DM-i entering the Colombian market. In December, BYD set a new record in monthly export volume for its DM-i models with the arrival of 1,200 units of Super Hybrid models in Colombia, marking the first Chinese-branded hybrid car to be sold well in Latin America.

BYD's expansion efforts have also relied on a dealer-based sales model to utilize the influence of local dealerships, which allows BYD to gain insights into consumer preferences and establish a brand presence overseas. In Brazil, BYD partnered with Saga, the largest local dealer group. In Mexico, BYD collaborated with eight dealers to provide local sales and after-sales service for new energy vehicles. In Central America, BYD joined forces with ATL Automotive, the largest investor in Jamaica's automotive sector, with operations spanning 10 countries.

Currently, BYD passenger cars have already gained visibility in Latin America.

In June 2023, the BYD DOLPHIN was launched in Brazil, achieving impressive sales figures of an average of 2 units sold every 5 minutes on the launch day and 300 units within 24 hours. BYD has established 24 brick-and-mortar dealerships in Brazil and plans to reach 100 by the end of the year. In Mexico, BYD delivered the first 100 units of the YUAN PLUS and has already opened five dealerships. By the end of 2023, BYD aims to establish 50 dealerships across Mexico, expanding its business presence to all 32 states. BYD's footprint in new energy passenger cars has now extended to over ten countries in Latin America, including Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Costa Rica. With BYD's support, Latin American countries are poised to spearhead a new wave of technological advancements and become a significant force in the global sustainable transportation movement.

On July 4, BYD announced its plans to invest in three new plants in Brazil, creating a robust production base complex. With the continuous enhancement of its global industrial chain, BYD will be well-equipped to meet the growing demand for new energy products in the Latin American and global markets, boasting a comprehensive product lineup and strengthened competitiveness.
