São Paulo, Brazil - BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles, announced, in collaboration with 99, a vehicle-for-hire company operating in Brazil owned by Didi Chuxing (“DiDi”), the arrival of 300 D1 EVs, on July 5th, the first electric vehicle tailor-made to meet the ride-hailing market's demands through an application, marking a new milestone in fleet electrification for passengers in Brazil.

The partnership, which is part of the Sustainable Mobility Alliance, created and led by 99 alongside 12 other companies from different areas, advances the goal of delivering a thousand electric cars by six months, previously set for the end of 2023. As a result, it now offers the largest fleet of electric vehicles in the country, with São Paulo as the pioneering city for the initiative.
In addition to being a member of the United Nations Global Compact, BYD has joined the São Paulo Environmental Agreement, which aims to encourage São Paulo companies, associations, and municipalities to voluntarily commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"BYD is currently the world's largest manufacturer of green vehicles. We are bringing to Brazil a successful project model developed in Shenzhen, China, where we developed the D1", says Stella Li, CEO of BYD Americas and Executive Vice President of the company, "This partnership with 99 aims to promote more sustainability and technology to local urban mobility, and we want to expand this alliance to have more electric cars on the streets of São Paulo. We are confident that this will be another success case for BYD worldwide."
The 300 BYD D1s will be available for rental by 99's partner drivers between July and October of this year and will have part of the rental fee subsidized by the platform, making the initiative more accessible.
"This is another important step towards more technological, intelligent, and sustainable cities. With the D1 EV vehicles, we are working to make São Paulo - the metropolis chosen to receive the project - an initial hub for clean energy vehicles, making them more accessible to 99's partner drivers in terms of both finance and infrastructure. Additionally, based on our experience with the D1 in China, we are able to discuss what really works, in practical terms, for partner drivers and passengers, as well as for the industry as a whole," says Thiago Hipolito, Director of Innovation and leader of DriverLAB at 99.
BYD joined the Sustainable Mobility Alliance in July 2022. In one year of operation, the partnership among the 12 companies - BYD, Santander Bank, CAOA Chery, Movida, Unidas, Raízen, Enel X Way, EzVolt, Tupinambá Energia, BV Bank, Zletric, and other companies in the electrification ecosystem - has invested over R$35 million. This includes the inclusion of a thousand electrified vehicles - electric and hybrid cars - in 99's fleet.
Contributing to its growing leadership in electric vehicles, the Alliance has achieved significant milestones, such as adding new partners, inaugurating Brazil's first 100% electric charging station, facilitating access to electric vehicles through car rental discounts, and conducting tests on seven different models of electric vehicles.
