Integration is a key enabler of the BYD e-Platform 3.0, which was launched in September 2021. Core features at the heart of the e-Platform 3.0 are the Blade Battery, the world's first mass-produced 8-in-1 electric powertrain and the highly efficient heat pump.
What makes BYD’s e-platform 3.0 special?
The innovative 8-in-1 electric powertrain integrates the Vehicle Control Unit, as well as the Battery Management System, Power Distribution Unit, Drive Motor, Motor Controller, Transmission and On-Board Charger.
Such deep integration delivers 89% system efficiency, and includes the driving and braking functions, with an advanced powertrain domain controller for the rapid response and full utilization of the electric motors. BYD’s cockpit domain controller and body domain controller are already in mass production.
As for software, BYD has independently developed the BYD OS which decouples hardware and software, offering an elite collaboration system for high levels of intelligent driving. Such domain architecture provides the foundation for safe and intelligent driving.
Safety as a top priority
Safety is a top priority for all BYD innovations. Benefiting from the ultra-safe Blade Battery, the flat elongated design also improves the structural rigidity of the e-Platform 3.0 in the event of a collision. With a force transmission path exclusively for EVs, the e-Platform 3.0 provides better protection. The BYD e-Platform 3.0 is also designed for efficiency. Pivotal to this is the 8-in-1 electric powertrain, reducing energy transfer loss with a comprehensive efficiency of up to 89%.
It also features the industry’s first direct cooling and heating system for power batteries, which increases the thermal efficiency by up to 20% in the winter. The innovative system leverages the residual heat from surroundings, the powertrain, passenger compartment and even the batteries, and can work at a wide range of temperatures. Intelligent thermal management for extreme weather conditions enables an excellent low temperature driving range.
Next generation intelligent electric mobility
Developed exclusively for pure electric vehicles, the e-Platform 3.0 is leading the way for the next generation of intelligent electric mobility. Improved intelligent experiences enable faster responsiveness and enhanced safety in extreme conditions. The e-Platform 3.0 is an evolution from distributed, to centralised electrical and electronic architecture dramatically enhancing computing power to build a rich cloud-based application ecosystem.
As a highly scalable platform, it offers the flexibility of two-wheel or four-wheel drive. In addition, the e-Platform 3.0 creates a completely new body structure, with shorter front overhangs, longer wheelbase, lower centre of gravity, more space, sense of movement and dynamics, as well as a drag coefficient (Cd) of only 0.21. The flat rear floor, made possible by the increased length and space-saving Blade Battery, creates more rear passenger space.
Given the adaptability of the e-Platform 3.0 for vehicles of varying sizes, it will be open to the wider industry to facilitate the co-development of intelligent EVs worldwide. The BYD ATTO 3 is the first BYD SUV to be equipped with the e-Platform 3.0.
